FAQ

Quick answers to the questions we hear most. Click a question to expand.

Will my writing be used to train AI?

Never. Your manuscripts, characters, story notes, and everything you create inside FinishTheBook.ai belongs entirely to you. We never use your writing to train AI models. Your unpublished work is private, protected, and yours alone.

How do I add my existing manuscript?

Two ways. From your books, click + New book and start fresh, or use the import flow if you already have a draft in Word or plain text.

For an existing manuscript: go to onboarding → import a manuscript. Paste in your chapters and Belle will read them, build your story bible, and split the prose into chapters automatically. Big books work, there's no chapter cap.

From inside the editor you can also re-import individual chapters by pasting prose into the canvas; the autosave picks it up like any other edit.

How do I teach Belle my writing style?

Belle has a per-user voice profile. Open Settings → Voice profile, paste in 1–3 chapters of your most-you writing, and click Analyze voice. Quill measures your average sentence length, rhythm, descriptive density, emotional temperature, and signature phrases.

Once your voice is on file, every Belle generation tries to match it, and Quill flags drift on save , if a chapter starts reading like someone else's book, you'll see a voice-check note in the activity feed.

What does Quill do?

Quill is the autonomous editor that watches your work in the background. Every time you save a chapter, Quill runs:

  • Continuity checks against your story bible (eye color, scars, who promised what).
  • Voice-drift checks against your voice profile.
  • Romance-pacing checks for your subgenre's beats and heat level.
  • Trope-thread tracking, flags dormant tropes and premature resolutions.
  • Real-time style underlines while you type (em dashes, filter words, passive voice, repeated words, lazy comparisons, and AI-tell patterns).

Issues land in the Quill activity feed. Most flagged issues hand off to Belle with a one-click Apply button so you can fix them in seconds.

What do the colored underlines in the editor mean?

Quill underlines style issues directly in the editor as you type. Each color is a different category. Hover over any underline to see the specific issue.

  • Red — em dashes. The brand voice avoids them; Quill flags every one so you can restructure with commas, periods, or new sentences.
  • Yellow — filter words (felt, saw, heard, noticed, watched, realized, wondered, thought, knew). Showing the experience directly is usually stronger.
  • Blue — passive voice candidates. Active voice keeps the prose moving.
  • Orange — words repeated within a 200-character window. Helps catch unintentional echo without flagging stylistic repetition.
  • Light purple — lazy comparisons (“like a moth to a flame”, “like a deer in headlights”, “heart racing like”). Specific images beat clichés.
  • Dark purple (thicker) — AI-tell patterns. Quill flags two patterns that recur in AI-assisted writing:
    • Rule of three. Three short emotional sentences in a row (“Cold. Cruel. Calculating.” / “Not safe. Not smart. Not hers.”). A single use is fine. Quill flags only when the pattern repeats more than twice within 500 words.
    • Not X but Y contrast. The negate-then-assert structure (“It was not safe, it was deadly.” / “Not now. Later.”). Quill flags only when this pattern appears more than three times in a chapter.

You can toggle real-time style checking off entirely from the panel that opens when you click the style-count badge in the editor topbar. The setting persists across sessions.

How many generations do I get?

A generation is one AI call, a Belle reply, a Quill on-save check, a prose draft, a beat-sheet analysis. The limits are:

  • Trial: 15 per day, 75 total over your 7-day trial. Hard stops.
  • Pro: 500 per month. A soft nudge appears at 50 in a day so you don't burn through your monthly cap in one sprint, but you can keep going.

If you hit the monthly cap before reset, you can buy a top-up: 100 generations for $7.99 or 250 for $14.99. Or just wait, the cap resets on the 1st automatically.

How do I cancel?

Open Settings → Subscription & billing, click Manage subscription. That opens Stripe's secure billing page where you can pause for a while, cancel anytime, update your card, or download invoices.

Cancelling at end of period is the default, you keep full access through what you've already paid for, then your account drops to free. Pausing freezes billing but keeps your story safe; AI generations turn off until you resume. Nothing you wrote ever gets deleted.

Is my writing private?

Yes. Your manuscripts, story bible, voice profile, and Belle conversations are scoped to your account. Only you can read them, not other users, not us casually browsing. We use Supabase row-level security so even a server-side bug can't leak rows across accounts.

AI generations go through Anthropic's API. Anthropic does not train its models on your content , that's their published policy for API usage. Your prose stays yours.

See the privacy policy for the full details.

Can I install Finish The Book on my phone?

Yes. Finish The Book runs as a Progressive Web App, so it installs to your home screen on iPhone and Android without going through the App Store.

iPhone (Safari): open finishthebook.ai in Safari, tap the Share button at the bottom of the screen, scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen. The app icon lands on your home screen and launches like a native app, no browser bar across the top.

Android (Chrome): open finishthebook.aiin Chrome. You'll usually get an “Install app” banner near the bottom, tap it. If you miss the banner, tap the three-dot menu at the top right and choose Install app or Add to Home Screen.

We're also working on a dedicated Google Play listing (in submission now) and an Apple App Store version (later this year). Until then, the home-screen install gives you everything the app store version will, with the same offline support and full-screen layout.

How do I report a bug?

Click the small ? button in the bottom-left of any page, it opens an email to finishthebook@finishthebook.ai with the right address pre-filled.

Helpful things to include: what you were doing, what you expected, what actually happened, and a screenshot if you have one. We'll write back the same day.

Still stuck? Email finishthebook@finishthebook.ai or click the ? in the bottom-left of any page.
